Metallica, whose leaked album Death Magnetic is coming out on September 12, launched a promotion on YouTube today that features the band’s favorite covers of their songs that have been uploaded to the site. Drummer Lars Ulrich introduces their selections, apparently made over a two day period, in the video to the right.

They say that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. Well, in the world of album cover art flattery occurs more often than you would think. Oftentimes its manifested as parody. In other instances, the imitations are paying homage to the original artist.
Soul Asylum (Clam Dip and Other Delights, 1988): The Minneapolis quartet swap hot model with bassist Karl Mueller and whipped cream with clam dip in a take off of Herb Alpert’s Whipped Cream and Other Delights. Mmmmm, tasty!

Never-before-seen photos have surfaced of Elvis Presley rocking Madison Square Garden in all his jumpsuited glory. The images were taken in 1972 by George Kalinsky, the official photographer of the famed arena, the singer’s estate said Wednesday.
Kalinsky needed to get permission from Elvis Presley Enterprises, the business arm of the performer's estate, to reproduce Presley's image for the campaign. The estate asked if he had any more photos, and Kalinsky came back with about 40…

Many years ago, in a far away place and time, companies wishing to promote their wares on television would hire songwriters to develop advertising jingles to promote whatever they were selling. But recently, in my mind, some companies have crossed the proverbial line, so to speak, by using classic Beatles music to pitch their products.
Its just a matter of time before we hear the Tom Jones song Whats New Pussycat? in a cat food commercial. Or how about the Raspberries hit Go All The Way? used for a Trojan commercial? And dont get me started on sleeping aids…
