RIAA, MPAA Converging on Political Conventions

Wednesday, August 27th, 2008

When the Recording Industry Association of America and the Motion Picture Association of America aren’t suing individuals and web sites for copyright infringement, they’re lobbying.

Take someone like Ron Paul. Whether you are familiar with him and support all of his positions or not, he is the one candidate who could return this government to constitutionality, which is why I support him - but the mainstream media has…

Pandora can’t make money, may pull the plug

Monday, August 18th, 2008

Pandora, one of the Internet’s most popular streaming radio stations, may have to close its doors due to significant royalty payments owed to the music industry. One more last-ditch effort could save the day, but even Pandora’s founder isn’t optimistic.

30 Seconds to Mars Owes $30 Million to Virgin?

Sunday, August 17th, 2008

It’s probably not as painful as having his arm chopped off in Darren Aronofsky’s Requiem for a Dream, but it’s still going to hurt. Because Virgin Records wants an arm and a leg from actor Jared Leto and his band 30 Seconds to Mars, for failure to deliver a new record on time. That’s a seriously hefty parking ticket.

After playing a steady stream of dates in 2007, 30 Seconds to Mars has reportedly been at work on the new effort, but evidently it's not moving fast enough for Virgin. Maybe it should book some time on Richard Branson's Virgin Galactic to…

5 Legendary Keyboards (and the songs they made famous)

Monday, August 4th, 2008

These days, theres no distinguishing one keyboard from the next because all they really do is act as computer trigger devices. But in the 60s, 70s, 80s, and even the early 90s, keyboards and their manufacturers were known for signature sounds.

Other noteworthy facts about the Synclavier: It was created at Dartmouth College by the team of: Sydney Alonso, who developed the hardware designs, Cameron Jones, who developed the software, and Dartmouth faculty member and composer Jon Appleton,…

U2 Goes DRM-Free on Rhapsody MP3 Store

Friday, August 1st, 2008

U2, the only band to have had an official iPod model made in its honor, has dropped the DRM from its music catalog for the first time. All 19 of the band’s full-length releases (including some special editions with bonus tracks) are now available on the Rhapsody MP3 store for $10 a piece, or $20 for double-length releases that contain bonus tracks.

Rhapsody began selling 256 Kbps, DRM-free MP3s in late June (launch party) on the same day the company announced partnerships with iLike, MTV and Yahoo. This also represents a new development for U2, whose manager Paul McGuinness has…
