Internet filtering suffers from a fatal flaw: it can’t filter what it can’t understand. If P2P protocols adopt encryption, filtering will lose much of its effectiveness, and the RIAA boss knows it. His solution? Move the filter onto your PC.
What's most incredible about all of this is that the RIAA and some ISPs (namely AT&T) are seriously moving ahead with a filtering regime despite their own admissions that it won't work. Filters might work, they…

Three months ago, the popular private BitTorrent tracker OiNK was effectively shut down in a joint effort by Dutch and British law enforcement. Today, the bail date for OiNK admin Alan Ellis has been extended for the second time, until the 6th of May.
It’s sounding more like a lack of strong evidence against Mr. Ellis (aka Oinky). Or could be the fact the IFPI and BPI are still stuggling how Oink really works. Or they may be looking for the nonexisting hundreds of thousands of pounds…

The majority of Swedish children between the ages of 8 and 14, admit that they download copyrighted music and videos on a regular basis.
Some time ago great Polish writer Stanislaw Lem wrote a number of stories called “Star Diaries: Further Reminiscences Of Ijon Tichy”. That’s not about socialism, as one could think, that’s all about today. Read it once…

U2, the world famous rock band, wants to turn all ISPs in to copyright police and have them stop all that darned piracy!
So, even if an ISP would opt to start doing inspections, and sorting out which packets were illegal, they would then run up against net neutrality violations. Net neutrality is a concept that ISPs must treat all packets of information equally no…

According to TorrentFreak, the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI) last week released their latest report, summing up the digital music landscape at the start of 2008. The IFPI claims in the report that for every legal music download, there are 20 illegal downloads taking place.
There are also 2 big issues not mentioned here. One is that all expenses for the record labels are proximately 1-2 € per record (recording, post-production, cover design, photo shooting etc included), but the average price for a single record is…

This short tutorial describes how to record audio tracks and then mix them all down using Qtractor — an Audio/MIDI multi-track sequencer application for Linux. It allows us to record soundtracks, add MIDI files, arrange, mix music and adjust the volumes, effects, and clean up the sound.
Step 7. Add some LADSPA effect plugins. Open the mixer window (View ->Mixer), then right-click empty field below the name of chosen track. Choose Add Plugin from the context menu. Then select the desired LADSPA effect. A plugin interface will…

My RSS reader is filled with Qtrax articles. Dozens of them. I want to write about BitTorrent but everyone is banging on about Qtrax, so I guess it’s only right to follow the crowd.
Alright, I can see how this could be a step in the right direction, but I’m wondering: If you live overseas, where the RIAA and MPAA don’t really have much influence, is it still a legal alternative to P2P? Just because american record…
